How to Wash a Silk Scarf
As the UK's leading on-line scarf company, we often get asked how to wash delicate items such as silk scarves or cashmere pashminas. This week, we'll look at how to wash a silk scarf. And next week we'll look at how to care for your cashmere. So, here is our little guide to keeping your silk scarves box-fresh. I hope it's helpful!
- Read the label and/or care instructions. If the label says, "Dry Clean Only", then make sure you have your silk scarf professionally cleaned.
- If it is possible to wash your silk scarf, then wash it by hand only. Silk requires gentle handling to keep its fibres intact. Machine washing is way too harsh.
- Use a delicate soap, preferably a specialised product. Do a little spot test before you begin washing.
- Always wash your scarves on their own, separately from other clothing, just in case colours run.
- Don't twist or rub your silk scarf while washing. This stops the scarf shrinking and keep its delicate fibres intact.
- Be careful to avoid wringing out the scarf. Instead lay it out on a towel and then roll up the towel to squeeze out any excess water.
- Never put your silk scarf in the dryer. Its high temperature will lead your scarf to lose its beautiful sheen and lead to shrinkage. Air drying is the best way to dry your silk scarf.
- Iron your silk scarf on a very low temperature or use a steamer to remove any creases.
- When wearing your scarf, avoid spraying it with perfume or other harsh chemicals such as hairspray.
- Finally, store your silk scarves in boxes that are clean and dry. If you prefer to hang up them up, then ensure the area is clean, dry and airy.
